Swiss Ferns: Conservation and Monitoring (SwiF)

Distribution

Object

Because the species are poorly understood and many field botanists avoid identifying ferns, the distributions of many native ferns are poorly understood. The aim is therefore to create updated maps of the historical and current distribution of ferns in Switzerland.

Activities

– Field mapping of ferns. The mapping is carried out in close cooperation with Info Flora and the «Discover Mission»
– Georeferencing of herbarium specimens from the herbaria in Zurich, Geneva, Bern, Lucerne, etc.

Products

– Updated distribution maps of Swiss ferns as part of the new distribution atlas of Switzerland (Info Flora).
– Comparison of the historical (approx. 1900–1930) and current distribution of the species.

How can you participate?

– Join our excursions to build and deepen your fern knowledge
– Explore the ferns in understudied areas.
– Search specifically for fern populations that have not been confirmed for a long time.
– Decipher old herbarium labels on the computer at home and find out where the corresponding ferns were collected.
