The genus of Dryopteris (Dryopteris) poses great challenges for field botanists. The most complicated group is the group of Dryopteris affinis, which in Switzerland not only includes the four subspecies recognized in Flora Helvetica, but also about ten taxa, some of which can be regarded as „good“ species. Jens Freigang has been dealing with these ferns for decades, has studied them intensively together with Günther Zenner, Kirn D, throughout Europe and cultivates hundreds of specimens at home in Germany. In this one-day course, Jens will first introduce us to the different forms and their characteristics using living material from his extensive collection. On the excursion we will then get to know the most common of these forms in the field and examine their characteristics in detail. We will also receive a lot of interesting information about other Dryopteris species (e.g. D. dilatata and D. expansa) and the entire fern flora of the excursion area.
Field trip location:
Due to the current drought, which has severely affected the ferns in the region of the upper Lake Geneva, the one-day identification course will be held in a different area than originally planned, namely at Rooterberg (LU). The start and end of the identification course will be coordinated with public transport connections. The detailed information (location, times, etc.) will be communicated by email after registration.
The course will be held twice:
on Saturday, September 17, 2022 in German with French translation,
on Sunday, September 18, 2022 in German.
The excursion is free for Farnfreunde members; for non-members, the one-day identification course costs CHF 40.
