Visit to the Geneva Botanical Garden & the Smaragd Region between Russin and Cartigny (GE)

  • von

The excursion will not take place and will be postponed to 2022.

Sunday, May 16, 2021, 10.35 a.m. – approx. 5.00 p.m.

In the morning we visit the Botanical Garden in Geneva, where we enjoy a look in front as well as behind the scenes. Frédéric Sandoz, research assistant and fern specialist, will guide us. One of the main focuses of the tour is the annual species; for this reason, we visit the garden – for „fern standards“ – relatively early in the year.

In the afternoon, we drive to Russin and wander through the emerald area «Complexe alluvial du Rhône genevois»; Frédéric Sandoz will accompany us and show us not only ferns but also orchids. In the vineyards around Russin we keep an eye out for Equisetum ramosissimum; at the Verbois dam and in the oxbow lakes of the Rhone before Cartigny, there is a chance that common terns and European pond turtles will steal the show from the ferns. Those who prefer to stay with botany: The semi-arid meadows near Cartigny are known for their great variety of orchids; Among other things, Orchis militaris and Orchis simia bloom in mid-May.
